Yoga?

This morning I awoke in a hurry since I kept turning off my alarm, and only realized this after the third time of hitting snooze. I normally have to get here around 1 o’clock, but I had it in my head that I wanted to take the 10 a.m. yoga class in Bryant Park, so if this was to be realized I absolutely had to catch the 8:57 a.m. train.(Yip, I live in New Jersey)

So, yup I did, but barely. I’m still impressed with how quick I was able to ready myself and not stress over it. (That being the key here, since I was going for yoga to relax.)  When I got to the park the yogis weren’t on the grass, they were across the park on the stone slate area near the Bryant Park restaurant.

When I got close enough to hear and see I noticed that the yogis weren’t yogis, and that the instructor was teaching cardio, not yoga. I thought, okay I’m doing cardio today.  I kicked off my sandals, set up my mat, and started to do the cardio barefoot. I’m no stranger to cardio classes, my mother set me up with a gym membership at 16 and I stuck with it until twenty-one. I took and liked everything except for step classes, that whole deal seems a little outdated, o and confusing.

So I went along with the kicking and punching, and I said the positive messages the instructor cheerfully prompted us to say over the headset microphone. “I am the one!” “I am the exception!” “I am exceptional!” “Now celebrate…Wooo!” It was fun. Another funny part of this experience were the onlookers who came quite close to take pictures of us, as if we were an NYC tourist attraction, I guess we were in a sense. And I inwardly laughed about being this New Jersey girl who took the bus there for that class. You see we can do anything, if just have to do it is all.

At some point I began to realize that although I could do this class, I wasn’t really accomplishing what I was there for. Ya see..cardio makes you go up-up, and I was hoping to float a little downward since I’ve been running all over the place with my personal assignments. So, I made the executive decision to stop before the class was over. I sat off to the side and watched, and I was content to do so. I also like to watch people and jot down notes when anyone does anything in an unusual, or lovely fashion. (I apply this observations to my fictional writing — So, I guess it isn’t that fictional. ha)

If this were me a year or more ago I would view this as quitting — But how is it quitting if the activity isn’t pleasing me? I guess I’m maturing. The moral of the story is that being able to quickly adapt to situations is a huge bonus to anyone’s life.  But the most important thing to do is to do what’s right for yourself. Don’t drink if you don’t want to, don’t have sex if you don’t want to, or do those things if you truly would like to do them. It all depends on what you want.

What I’m trying to say is…Do what’s right for you, the key two words here are, “what’s right.”

Okay…that’s enough..I don’t want to annoy you.

Best,

Jane F.

It is thought people who come from countries where yoga is practiced as part of the daily life have better love lives, but I have an insider’s perspective on this one> Rad more: http://www.fixmylove.com/blog/episodeview/id_154/
