Magic Plant

Did you know that not only can you wear T-shirts and other clothing made out of ultra-soft hemp seed, but you can also eat and drink it, too?

You may have images in your mind of hippie necklaces with beads that are sold at folk festivals, but I can assure you, today’s hemp is as sophisticated as HDTV.

From cotton-soft clothing to chocolate milk, it seems that hemp is one of the most sustainable plants on earth. Canadian companies like NuHemp (for animals) and Manitoba Harvest (for humans) manufacture a slew of various products, like this hemp hideout for small animals like ferrets and guinea pigs, to hemp seed oil shampoos, to gourmet dog treats made with hemp meal. At Planet Dog, you’ll find hemp collars that are fleece-lined, providing extra comfort for your faithful friend. At Manitoba, you’ll find recipes for chili, cheesecake, burgers, and muffins in which you can add a dash of shelled hemp seed and hemp seed oil. Yum!

Hemp seed’s soft, inner nut is naturally rich in omega 3, 6, and 9, as well as GLA fatty acids (Gamma-linolenic acid in the omega-6 family), and Vitamin E. The oil is very similiar to flax seed oil, only tastes better.

If you’ve tried it, what did you think?
