Saying Good-Bye

Daddy lived in a nursing home about two and a half hours from the large city where my older brother, my sister, and I live. Our younger brother, who lived with Daddy, served as his primary caregiver. We each took a weekend to sit with Daddy and give our brother a break.

Daddy’s emphysema made conversation difficult, so we shared quiet time watching Gunsmoke reruns on his small television. The plan worked well for years, until shortly after my October visit. My brother’s three children were involved in a fatal car accident. My brother and his wife were dealing with the loss of their three-year-old son and making daily visits to their other son, who remained in a coma. His daughter, who had two broken ankles, stayed with me when she was released from the hospital.

The family needed my help, but caring for my niece meant that I couldn’t make my trips to see Daddy or explain why I wasn’t coming. My brother wanted to tell Daddy in person, which made sense. Daddy doted on his newest grandson and hearing the news over the phone would be too hard. The only problem was that my brother wasn’t able to leave for a visit to the nursing home. I was worried because Daddy wouldn’t know why we weren’t going to see him.

Mystery Girl

It was a hot summer day in June of 1997. My husband and I were both working that day and he came to pick me up for lunch. We went and got some burgers and fries and went to our local park to eat. We found an empty table and sat down.

I wasn’t my usual self that day. I was sad and I felt like I was moving on autopilot. My mother had just died of a massive heart attack the previous week. We began to eat our food when we looked up and saw a group of children playing. This one girl in particular, about ten or eleven years old, started walking toward us.

When she got closer, I thought to myself, oh my God, she looks so much like me. She came up to our table and sat down. She started talking to us, her attention on me most of the time. My husband did most of the talking, as I was still upset over my mother’s death. The girl would answer him, and then she would turn her attention right back to me. She saw my nametag that I had to wear at the hospital where I work and she asked if I was a nurse. I told her that I was the director of housekeeping. She smiled at me so sweetly.

Women Are Wonderful

One Special Lady

I want to tell you about this special lady. She is my sister-in-law and a mother of five. When she moved here from Texas, we became two peas in a pod. One day while celebrating a relative’s birthday, I received a call from my mother. I knew right away that something was wrong. My mom told me that my grandmother had passed away. It took a few minutes before the tears started rolling down my face.

My sister-in-law followed us home to help us pack. I didn’t even remember the drive home. All I remember was standing in my bedroom while my sister-in-law threw clothes into my suitcase. Usually I’m the take-charge person in my family, but that night I was lost.

I sat on my bed and told my sister-in-law, “I don’t know what to do.”

“Let’s pray,” she said as she took my hands. After we’d prayed, she looked me in the eyes and said, “I know how much you loved your grandmother and this is hard, but you have to get it together. Your folks need you to be strong.”

This was a side of her I’d never seen. She packed the rest of our clothes, said one more prayer with us, and she drove home to her family. Torn with grief, we planned my grandmother’s funeral.

It was beautiful. It was my sister-in-law’s strong words and prayers that helped me help my family. I will always be grateful for that special lady.
